Garden Care That Respects Larchmont's Mature Trees

Larchmont yards are small, shaded and on view from the sidewalk, so the details, like clean hedge lines, healthy beds and tidy edges, carry more weight here than square footage.

Landscaping in Larchmont, NY

In the Village of Larchmont and the Manor, houses sit close together on streets lined with big oaks, maples and old rhododendrons. Front yards are often just a strip of lawn, a foundation bed and a hedge, which means everyone walking to the train notices when a privet line goes ragged. Larchmont Woods and Larchmont Gardens, in the unincorporated part of the town, have a little more room but similar shade and the same heavy fall leaf drop.

Our Larchmont work leans toward ongoing care: shaping hedges two or three times a season, refreshing mulch, dividing and replanting beds that have lost their structure under the canopy, and clearing leaves in fall. When a client is ready for a bigger change, we redesign beds with shade-tolerant shrubs and perennials that suit older Tudor, Colonial and shingle-style homes. Roman Design & Landscaping is family-owned, and every visit is made by our own crew.

What Larchmont Gardens Ask of Us

01

Hedges that frame small lots

Privet, boxwood, yew and arborvitae hedges define many Larchmont properties. Trimmed too late or too hard, they thin out at the bottom and open gaps. We shear on a schedule that matches each species, keep the base wider than the top so light reaches the lower branches, and flag declining plants before they leave a hole.

02

Deep shade under an old canopy

Mature street trees and backyard oaks leave many beds with only a few hours of sun, and lawn rarely thrives there. We replace thin turf with ferns, hellebores, hostas, Allegheny spurge and other woodland groundcovers, and we spread mulch carefully over shallow tree roots instead of piling it against trunks.

03

A heavy fall leaf load

By November, oak and maple leaves can smother lawns and beds. Our fall cleanups remove the leaves, cut back spent perennials and leave beds tidy for winter, and spring visits clear whatever blew in over the cold months. If you like, we leave shredded leaves in back beds as a natural mulch.

Larchmont landscaping questions

How often should a Larchmont hedge be trimmed?

Most privet hedges need two or three cuts between late spring and early fall to stay crisp. Boxwood and yew usually need one or two. We set a schedule based on the plants you have and how formal you want the line to look, and we avoid heavy cuts during summer heat.

Can you add color to a front yard that's almost all shade?

Yes, though the color comes more from foliage and spring bloom than from summer annuals. Hydrangeas, Japanese forest grass, variegated hostas, astilbe and coral bells all hold up in partial shade. Before choosing, we check how many hours of direct sun each bed really gets.

Do you take care of houses in Larchmont Woods and Larchmont Gardens?

We do. Our routes cover the Village of Larchmont, the Manor and the unincorporated neighborhoods that share the Larchmont address, along with nearby Mamaroneck and New Rochelle. Call or text (914) 467-9927, or send us a WhatsApp message, to set up a visit.
