Landscaping for Rye's Shoreline and Inland Streets

A Milton Point lawn that catches salt spray off the Sound and a Loudon Woods yard under tall oaks need very different plans, and we design each one for what it actually faces.

What Rye Yards Are Up Against

01

Salt spray and wind off the Sound

Properties near Milton Point, Oakland Beach and Rye Town Park take wind-driven salt each winter, which browns boxwood and burns tender perennials. We lean on plants that shrug it off, such as bayberry, beach rose, switchgrass and inkberry holly, and we place the more delicate beds in the lee of the house or a hedge.

02

Low ground near Blind Brook

Yards in the downtown flats and along the brook can sit soggy for days after a nor'easter. We look at where water enters and leaves the property, then regrade, add drainage stone or a dry well, and choose plants that tolerate wet feet so the lawn isn't the only thing absorbing the runoff.

03

Formal settings for older houses

Many Rye homes are Colonials, Tudors and shingle-style houses that look best with a structured landscape. We design symmetrical foundation plantings, clipped hedges and bluestone or natural stone walkways that suit the architecture, and we can phase the work so the front yard is finished before the back.

Caring for Rye properties

Rye packs a lot of variety into a small city. Waterfront homes along Milton Harbor and Oakland Beach deal with wind and salt, while houses near downtown sit close to Blind Brook, which is known for overflowing during heavy storms. Inland, Greenhaven and Indian Village have older plantings under tall oaks that need careful editing rather than a clean sweep. Roman Design & Landscaping plans each yard around those conditions instead of using one planting list for the whole city.

Here, a project might mean replacing tired foundation shrubs, adding a bluestone terrace behind a shingle-style house, or regrading a side yard that stays wet after rain. Our own crews handle the installation, and a free walk-through is usually scheduled within one to three days. Roman and a bilingual team have worked across Westchester since 2009, so we know how Rye soils and exposures behave from one season to the next.

What clients say

“In preparation for marketing our home we engaged Roman Landscape to do a major cleanup and overhaul of our front and back yards. The property was in need of hard work. Roman had a vision to add curb appeal and did a great job. He is honest, hardworking, reliable and prompt. I would highly recommend him!”

Rye landscaping questions

Which plants hold up best on a Milton Point or Oakland Beach property?

Salt-tolerant natives do the heavy lifting: bayberry, beach plum, switchgrass, seaside goldenrod and inkberry holly. Hydrangeas and Japanese maples can still work, but we set them behind a windbreak. During the free estimate we check the exposure on each side of the house before suggesting anything.

My yard near Blind Brook floods in every big storm. Can landscaping actually help?

Landscaping can't stop the brook from rising, but it can keep everyday storm water from pooling against your foundation and drowning the lawn. Grading soil away from the house, adding a dry well or a stone swale, and planting rain-tolerant shrubs usually makes a noticeable difference after ordinary heavy rains.

When should I book a patio for my Rye home if I want it ready for summer?

Our peak hardscape window runs May through October, and spring calendars fill quickly. Calling in late winter leaves time for a site visit, a design you're comfortable with, and any permit check the city may require. If a later start makes more sense for your yard, we'll tell you up front.
