Patios, walkways and garden paths in pavers, natural stone or concrete, built on a proper base so they stay flat through Westchester winters.
What you see on a patio is the top inch. What decides whether it stays flat is underneath. Westchester's freeze-thaw cycles move moisture up and down through the soil every winter, and clay pockets hold water that heaves a patio laid on a thin bed of sand. We excavate to firm ground, remove roots and organic soil, install and compact a crushed stone base in layers, and set the pitch so water runs away from the house. On rocky lots we work around ledge or remove stone as needed, and edge restraints keep pavers from spreading over time.
Design matters as much as construction. We help you size a patio for how you actually use it, from a dining table and grill to a fire area or a quiet sitting spot under the trees, and plan walkways that follow the natural route people take from the driveway to the door. Materials include concrete pavers, natural stone such as bluestone, and poured concrete for walks and landings. Hardscape can tie in with steps, low walls, plantings, fire pits and drainage, all built by our own crews. Peak installation season runs May through October, so planning over the winter helps secure a spot.

We propose a size, shape and pattern, help you choose pavers or stone, and mark the footprint on site so you can see it before any digging starts. We also flag if your village may require a permit.
Our crew excavates, builds and compacts the base in layers, sets pitch, lays and cuts the surface, installs edging and fills the joints. Lawn and beds around the work area are protected and restored.
We walk the finished work with you and explain care, such as joint sand and sealing options. If something settles or is not right, we come back and fix it.
Hardscape is built when the ground is not frozen, and our peak installation window in Westchester runs from May through October. Early spring work is possible once the frost is out and the soil has dried, but very wet clay slows excavation and compaction. Fall is a good time to build: the weather is cooler, plantings around the new patio can go in right afterward, and the space is ready to use the following spring. Because spring and early summer book up quickly, we suggest getting an estimate in winter or early spring if you want a patio finished in time for summer.

“Roman Design & Landscaping has been taking care of our property for at least 8-10 years. I run two businesses from my home and they have done an excellent job. They also rebuilt our cement landings and stairs leading outside from the front and side entrances of the property. Roman's company beautifully fixed all of our stairs and walkways, making sure the stair heights were within the current building codes!! We highly recommend Roman Design & Landscaping!!”
Both last when installed on a proper base. Concrete pavers come in many shapes and colors, are consistent in thickness and are easy to repair by lifting and resetting individual pieces. Natural stone like bluestone has a classic look that suits older Westchester homes and historic neighborhoods. We bring samples, talk through the look you want and how the area will be used, and recommend what fits.
Most failures come from the base, not the pavers. A patio laid on too little gravel, on soft organic soil, or without good drainage moves as the ground freezes and thaws each winter. Tree roots and downspouts dumping water next to the patio also cause trouble. We dig to firm ground, compact the base in layers and plan exactly where the water goes.
Often, yes. Sunken or heaved pavers can usually be lifted, the base corrected and the same pavers reset. Loose stones on a walkway can be rebedded, and cracked concrete sections can be replaced. If the base under the whole patio has failed, a rebuild may make more sense. We will tell you honestly which option fits your situation.
It depends on your village or town and on the project. Some municipalities have rules on lot coverage, setbacks or work near wetlands, and larger projects may need approval. Requirements differ across Westchester, so we help you check with the local building department before work starts and plan the design around what is allowed.
Most residential patios and walkways take anywhere from a few days to a couple of weeks of work, depending on size, materials, site access and weather. Natural stone with a lot of cutting takes longer than a simple paver layout. We give you a realistic schedule at the estimate and keep you updated if rain or ground conditions move the dates.
