Spring & Fall Yard Cleanups in Westchester County

A thorough reset of the yard twice a year: clearing winter damage and old growth in spring, and getting leaves, beds and plants ready for winter in fall.

Spring in Westchester usually starts with a mess: matted leaves left in beds and along fences, branches brought down by winter storms, perennials that were never cut back, and turf scraped up along the edge of the driveway. A spring cleanup clears all of that so the lawn and beds can grow. We rake out beds and lawn edges, cut back dead perennial and ornamental grass growth, prune winter damage on shrubs, re-cut crisp bed edges and haul the debris away. It is also the right moment to plan mulch, planting or lawn repair, while everything is still easy to see.

Fall is about leaf volume. Properties with mature oaks, maples and tulip trees can produce far more leaves than anyone wants to bag on a weekend, and oak leaves in particular are slow to break down. Left on the lawn over winter, a thick layer smothers the grass and invites mold and disease. Our fall cleanup removes leaves from the lawn, beds, patios and the corners where they pile up against the house, cuts back perennials, clears out annuals and hauls everything away, or mulches leaves in place where that helps the soil. Irrigation blowout and bulb planting can happen on the same visits.

How it works

Free walk-through

We walk the property with you, note leaf volume, bed areas, storm debris and anything else you want handled, and give you a clear scope. Estimates are free and usually scheduled within 1–3 days.

Scope and scheduling

We agree on what goes into the cleanup, whether leaves are hauled away or mulched in place, and whether you want a single cleanup or several fall visits as the leaves come down.

Cleanup day

Our crew works through the lawn, beds, hard surfaces and edges in order, loads out the debris and leaves the property raked and blown clean. Nothing is left piled at the curb unless you ask for it.

Photos and follow-up

When the work is done we send you a text with photos and flag anything we noticed, like a damaged shrub or a low spot holding water. If something is not right, we come back and fix it.

When to schedule

Spring cleanups in Westchester usually run from mid-March into April, once the ground has thawed and dried enough to work without tearing up wet turf. Fall cleanups follow the leaves: maples tend to drop first, while oaks often hold on into late November and sometimes December. On properties with heavy tree cover, one cleanup rarely catches everything, so many clients book two or three fall visits, with a final pass after the oaks have finished. Booking early is wise, since early spring and late fall are the busiest weeks of the year for cleanups.

Common questions

What is included in a spring cleanup?

A typical spring cleanup covers raking leaves and debris out of beds and along fences, cutting back last year's perennials and ornamental grasses, pruning winter-damaged branches on shrubs, edging beds, picking up fallen branches and hauling everything away. Many clients add mulch, lawn seeding or new planting right after, since the beds are clean and ready.

How many fall cleanups do I need?

It depends on your trees. A property with a few young trees may only need one visit after most leaves have dropped. Yards under mature oaks and maples often need two or three visits, because maples drop early and oaks hold their leaves late. Spacing out the visits also keeps leaves from sitting matted on the lawn for weeks at a time.

Can you mulch the leaves instead of hauling them away?

Yes, where it makes sense. A light layer of leaves can be shredded with the mower and left on the lawn, where it breaks down over winter. Shredded leaves can also go into beds as a natural mulch. Heavy layers of oak leaves are another story and usually need to be removed, or they will smother the grass underneath.

Should perennials be cut back in fall or spring?

Both approaches work, and we follow your preference. Cutting back in fall gives a tidy look over winter and removes foliage that can carry disease. Leaving some seed heads and ornamental grasses standing until spring gives winter interest and shelter for birds and pollinators. Many clients do a mix: tidy the front beds in fall and leave naturalized areas for spring.

Do you remove fallen branches and brush?

Yes. Branches from winter storms, brush piles, vines and general yard waste are part of a cleanup and are hauled away. For larger jobs, like clearing a badly overgrown area or taking down a dead tree, we quote that work separately so you know exactly what is included. Tree removal and stump grinding are also services we handle.
