Garden Design and Stonework for Bronxville Homes

Bronxville's Tudors and stone-trimmed houses sit on hilly, wooded lots that call for gardens with structure: stone steps, layered plantings and hedges kept in proportion.

Landscaping in Bronxville, NY

Bronxville is a village of roughly one square mile, yet it has more grade change than many towns several times its size. Lawrence Park climbs a rocky hillside above the Bronx River, with a mix of Tudor, shingle and Arts and Crafts houses tucked among outcrops and old trees. Closer to the village center and the Metro-North station, homes sit on smaller lots, often with stone walls, steps and walks as old as the houses themselves.

Gardens here have to respect that setting. We design planting plans that layer evergreens, flowering shrubs and shade perennials beneath mature canopy, repair and rebuild stone retaining walls and steps, and keep hedges and foundation plantings trimmed in proportion to the architecture. In Cedar Knolls and Armour Villa, the Yonkers neighborhoods with Bronxville addresses, we bring the same approach. Our own crews handle installation and care, and every design consultation starts with a free estimate.

Designing Around Bronxville's Hills and Old Stone

01

Rock outcrops and steep beds

Exposed ledge is part of Lawrence Park's character, but it leaves pockets of thin soil and steep banks. Rather than fight it, we plant around the stone with drought-tolerant groundcovers, ferns and low shrubs, build small terraces where soil needs holding, and set stepping stones so you can reach every corner of the garden.

02

Historic stone walls and steps

Many Bronxville walls and stairs are dry-laid or mortared fieldstone that has shifted with frost and roots. We reset loose stones, rebuild collapsed sections with matching material and add drainage behind new work. On steps, we even out uneven risers so they're safe to walk without losing their old-world look.

03

Shade gardens under mature trees

Tall oaks, beeches and maples give the village its look but leave little light for lawns. We design beds that thrive in partial shade, using rhododendron, mountain laurel, hydrangea, hellebores, ferns and woodland phlox, and we plan ahead for the heavy leaf fall that arrives every autumn.

Bronxville landscaping questions

Can you design a garden for a Lawrence Park house that doesn't look brand new?

Yes. We favor plants and materials that feel settled: native shrubs, natural stone, mossy groundcovers and a looser layout that follows the slope. During the consultation we look at the style of the house and the existing trees, then propose a plan that can be installed all at once or in stages.

Does a stone wall repair in Bronxville need village approval?

It depends on the wall's height, its location and whether the property is in a historic area. Some projects need a permit or review and others don't. We can't give a blanket answer, but we'll help you check with the village before work begins and plan the project around whatever it requires.

How do you keep a hillside garden from washing out?

We combine planting with structure: deep-rooted shrubs and groundcovers to bind the soil, mulch or stone to slow surface water, and low terraces or boulders where the grade is steepest. On the worst spots, we may add a small drain to carry water around the bed instead of through it.
