Curb Appeal for Pelham's Tudors, Colonials and Victorians

Pelham houses sit close to the street and close to each other, so the front walk, the foundation bed and the hedge do most of the talking.

Landscaping in Pelham, NY

The Town of Pelham holds two villages, Pelham and Pelham Manor, in a compact area along the Bronx line. Pelham Heights, Chester Park and Pelhamwood are known for Tudor Revival, Colonial and Victorian houses on lots where the front yard is mostly a walk, a few steps and a planting bed. Many of those walks are original slate, brick or concrete that has shifted with decades of tree roots and frost.

Our Pelham projects often begin at the front door. We reset or rebuild walkways and landings in bluestone, brick or pavers, redo foundation plantings that have grown over the windows, and shape hedges so they frame the house instead of hiding it. After the installation, we can keep everything trimmed and mulched on a regular schedule. Roman Design & Landscaping is family-owned, our crews are bilingual, and the first visit and estimate are free.

What Pelham Front Yards Usually Need

01

Heaved and uneven front walks

Old slate and brick walks in Pelham often tilt or catch a toe after years of root growth and freeze-thaw. We lift the existing material, rebuild the base with compacted gravel and reset it level, or replace it with bluestone or pavers when the original can't be saved, keeping the pattern in character with the house.

02

Overgrown foundation plantings

Yews and hollies planted decades ago can swallow windows and porches. Sometimes hard renewal pruning brings them back; sometimes replacement is smarter. We tell you which, then plant a layered bed of evergreens, flowering shrubs and perennials sized for the space so it doesn't outgrow the house again.

03

Hedges on tight property lines

With neighbors a few feet away, a privet or arborvitae hedge is often the only privacy screen. We trim on a regular cycle, keep the hedge narrow enough to leave room on the driveway side, and replace dead sections with matching plants so the screen stays continuous.

What clients say

“A team of hardworking, reliable and conscientious workers. I've been working with Roman and team for almost 4 years and we still have more work to do. I am confident that Roman can change my vision into a reality. So far, they've transformed 4 to 5 sections of my outdoor into beautiful more manageable spaces, combination of decorative stone, perennials and mulched open space. Excellent work and I highly recommend.”

Pelham landscaping questions

Can you match a new walkway to the original stone on my Pelham Tudor?

In most cases we can get close. We look at the color, size and pattern of the existing stone or brick and source a compatible material. When an exact match isn't available, we'll suggest a complementary border or pattern so the new work looks deliberate rather than patched.

Should I replace my old yews or try cutting them back?

Yews respond well to hard pruning, so many can be cut back and will fill in again over a season or two. Hollies and boxwood are less forgiving. During the estimate we check the health and structure of each shrub and give you an honest recommendation, including the option of replacing only part of the bed.

Do you work in both the Village of Pelham and Pelham Manor?

Yes, both villages, including Pelham Heights, Chester Park and Pelhamwood, plus neighboring New Rochelle, Mount Vernon and Eastchester. Some village rules can apply to work near sidewalks and streets, and we're glad to help you check what's needed before a project starts.
