Stonework and Deer-Smart Gardens for Armonk Properties
Old fieldstone walls, rock outcrops and wooded acreage define much of Armonk. We build on that character with new stonework and plantings chosen to hold up against the deer.
Exposed ledge and boulders often sit just inches below the surface, and the old walls lining many lots have slumped after a century of frost heave. We rebuild and extend dry-laid walls using matching native stone where possible, and build retaining walls with a proper base and drainage where grade changes need real support. Some taller walls may require town review; we help you check.

Constant deer browsing
Deer pressure in northern Westchester is heavy, and Armonk properties bordering woods see it year-round. We favor plants deer usually avoid, such as boxwood, Pieris, spruce, ornamental grasses, catmint and many native ferns, group vulnerable favorites close to the house, and suggest fencing or repellent routines where needed, so new plantings do not become an expensive buffet.

Patios that belong in a wooded setting
On a rocky, sloped lot, a patio has to sit comfortably against outcrops and tree roots. We lay out bluestone, flagstone or paver patios and walkways that follow the grade, use natural stone steps to connect levels, and protect the root zones of large trees during excavation. Planning in early spring puts your project on the May-to-October installation calendar.
Caring for Armonk properties
Armonk is a hamlet within the Town of North Castle, and once you leave the shops along Main Street and Route 22, the landscape turns rural quickly. Properties in areas such as Windmill Farm, Whippoorwill and around Byram Lake often run an acre or more, with mature hardwoods, bedrock ledge just below the topsoil, and stone walls that predate the houses. Those walls are a big part of what gives the area its feel.
That is why masonry leads much of our Armonk work. We repair and extend dry-laid walls, build new retaining walls to level a lawn or a driveway edge, and set bluestone patios and walkways that look at home among the rock. Planting comes next, and here deer are the deciding factor: we design with species they tend to leave alone and protect the ones they do not. Our family-run crews handle each step themselves, start to finish.
What clients say
“We recently had some landscaping done by Roman and we couldn't be happier with the results! From the initial consultation to the final touches, their team was professional, efficient, and extremely skilled. Our home now boasts a stunning outdoor space that complements our aesthetic. Not only did they exceed our expectations, but they also completed the job within our budget. We will obviously be using them again, and we highly recommend Roman Design and Landscaping!”
Can you match the old stone walls on my Armonk property?
We try to. Where we can, we reuse stone from the existing wall and source native fieldstone of similar color and size for the new sections. Laying style matters as well, so we study how the original was built, whether tightly fitted or rougher, and follow that pattern so the repair blends in rather than standing out.
What can I plant in Armonk that deer will not eat?
Nothing is guaranteed, but some plants are browsed far less: boxwood, Pieris, spruce, bayberry, ornamental grasses, catmint, lavender, alliums and many ferns. Hostas, arborvitae, yews and tulips are usually the first to go. We pair resistant plants with smart placement and, when you want to keep the favorites, fencing or a repellent program.
Do you work in other parts of North Castle besides Armonk?
Yes. Along with Armonk, we cover Banksville, North White Plains and the rest of the Town of North Castle. Many properties there share the same wooded, rocky character, so the same wall, patio and planting experience applies. Call or text (914) 467-9927 to check your street and set up a free estimate.
