Keeping Chappaqua's Wooded Lots Tidy and Dry

Chappaqua homes tend to sit back from winding roads under tall oaks and tulip trees, surrounded by rhododendrons and mountain laurel that have had decades to spread. Our job is to keep all that growth in shape and the water moving where it should.

Our crews in Chappaqua

Chappaqua is a hamlet in the Town of New Castle, settled by Quakers in the 1700s and still marked by old stone walls, ridges and stream valleys. Away from the shops near the Metro-North station and King Street, most homes are colonials and contemporaries on wooded lots of an acre or more. Shade is the rule rather than the exception, so plantings often matter more than lawn, and big evergreen shrubs can quietly swallow a front walk.

We spend much of our time here pruning and mulching: shaping hedges, thinning rhododendrons and hollies, and laying fresh mulch so beds look finished and hold moisture. The terrain brings a second job. Long driveways, hillside lots and wet hollows near brooks send water where it should not go, so we regrade, add drains and stabilize eroding banks. In fall, the leaf volume under a full canopy keeps our cleanup crews in Chappaqua well into December.

Chappaqua maintenance needs, and our approach

01

Overgrown rhododendrons, laurel and hedges

Broadleaf evergreens love Chappaqua's acidic, shady soil and can reach second-floor windows if left alone. We prune them right after bloom so next year's buds are not lost, thin dense interiors to let in light and air, and shape privet, yew and holly hedges so they stay full at the base. Old, leggy shrubs can often be renewed over two or three seasons instead of replaced.

02

Mulch that protects shallow roots

Under mature trees, roots run close to the surface and compete with everything planted nearby. A measured layer of shredded mulch, kept off trunks and stems, holds moisture, suppresses weeds and moderates soil temperature. We cut clean bed edges, remove old matted layers when they build up, and avoid the deep mulch volcanoes that harm trees over time.

03

Runoff from long driveways and hillsides

Steep driveways and sloped lawns can push stormwater into garages, basements and neighboring yards, and gullies form along unprotected edges. We regrade, install channel or French drains, add stone-lined swales, and plant or armor eroding banks. On lots near brooks and wetlands, we keep the work measured and help you check what review may apply.

Chappaqua landscaping questions

When is the right time to prune rhododendrons and mountain laurel in Chappaqua?

Right after they finish flowering, usually late spring into early summer. Both set next year's flower buds over the summer, so pruning in fall or early spring removes the coming bloom. Heavier renewal pruning can be spread across a few years. We schedule these visits separately from routine hedge trimming so the timing suits each plant.

How often should my Chappaqua beds be mulched?

For most properties, once a year in spring is enough, with a light top-up in fall on beds that are exposed or heavily used. Under deep shade, mulch breaks down slowly, so we often just refresh and loosen the surface rather than piling on more. Too much buildup can starve roots of air.

Water runs down my driveway into the garage. What can be done?

Common fixes include a trench or channel drain across the bottom of the driveway, regrading the shoulders so water leaves the pavement sooner, and a swale or dry well that takes the water somewhere it can soak in. The right answer depends on the slope and soil, so we look at the site and explain the options at the free estimate.

What clients say

“Roman and his team did an amazing job! They were on-time, professional, and even worked through the rain to get the job done. Our yard was in need of a major clean up after we moved in. The crew meticulously tended to each planter bed, trimmed bushes/trees, and treated our property as if it were their own. They are the best for great service and affordable prices. I will use them again and highly recommend.”
