Hillside Gardens and Stone Steps in Hastings-on-Hudson

Hastings sits right across the river from the Palisades, on streets so steep that many front doors are reached by stairs. Small, sloped yards here reward smart planting more than big lawns.

Landscaping in Hastings-on-Hudson, NY

Most Hastings properties are compact, and a good share of them are tilted. Around Draper Park and up toward Farragut Parkway, homes sit above or below the street with stone stairs, short walls and narrow terraces connecting everything. Closer to Hillside Woods the yards back onto forest, and along Edgars Lane and the streets off Warburton Avenue you will find older houses with gardens that have been reworked by several owners over the years.

Homeowners in Hastings often ask us for less lawn, not more. We design native and pollinator-friendly beds, swap tired turf on steep banks for groundcovers that hold the soil, and rebuild the stone steps and walls that make a hillside lot work. Ongoing care includes shrub pruning and mulching timed to each plant. You can talk to our bilingual team in English or Spanish, by phone, text or WhatsApp.

How we approach Hastings-on-Hudson landscapes

01

Banks too steep to mow

Grass on a sharp slope is hard to cut and quick to wash out. We replace it with deep-rooted native groundcovers, grasses and shrubs, set with jute netting or stone where needed until roots take hold. The bank stops eroding, the mowing stops, and the planting gives birds and pollinators something to work with.

02

Old stone stairs and short walls

Hastings is full of stairways that climb from the sidewalk to the front door, many built long ago without footings. We reset loose treads, rebuild failed sections in natural stone, and add handrail-friendly landings where the climb is long, keeping the look of the original work.

03

Careful pruning in small gardens

On a compact lot, one overgrown shrub can block a window or the river view. We prune by plant type and season rather than shearing everything into a ball, thin out crowded beds, and top-dress with mulch that keeps moisture in without smothering crowns.

Hastings-on-Hudson landscaping questions

Can you turn part of my lawn into a native garden?

Yes, and it is one of our favorite projects in Hastings. We remove the turf, improve the soil, and plant a mix of native perennials, grasses and shrubs chosen for your sun and slope. We also give you a simple plan for the first two seasons while the garden establishes.

Our front steps are crumbling. Can you rebuild them in stone?

We can. We take out the failing steps, pour or set a proper base, and rebuild in bluestone, fieldstone or another natural stone that suits the house. If the climb is steep, we may add a landing or two to make it easier on knees and safer in winter.

Do you do routine shrub trimming and mulching, or only bigger projects?

Both. Many Hastings clients have us in for spring mulching and shrub pruning, a summer touch-up and a fall cleanup. Others call when a design project is done and want someone to keep it looking the way it did on day one. Either way, our own crews do the work.
